I traveled to Fort Lauderdale a few years ago to do some modeling. The photographer and I were doing a location shoot at the house of a friend of his. The friend was having a Halloween party that Saturday and so he invited me. “A costume party?” I asked. He said yes. I said I didn’t pack a costume on this trip. As I was standing there naked having this conversation with him, he said, well, just come in your birthday suit — come as a streaker! I thought about it a minute and then said okay.

When I arrived on his street that Saturday evening, I could tell the party was well underway because cars were everywhere. I had to park half a block away. In the spirit of truly being a streaker, I figured I’d just go naked from my truck. I took off my clothes in the truck, attached the key to my leather anklet and had a look around outside. It was dark enough and there weren’t people outside on the street (kids were all done trick-or-treating by this hour), so I got up my nerve and just went for it. Have you ever given serious thought to how many material possessions you have? I hadn’t ever really thought about it until a few years ago when a friend moved to CA from FL. When he moved, he had to do it pretty cheap. What little furniture he had, he gave away. Everything he took with him consisted of his car (a sedan) and what he could fit into it. That’s it!

That was a wakeup call to me. I started to think about how many things I have in my house. And I began to wonder, what would it be like to be away from all my material possessions, just for a little while. “How could I detach myself from them?” I wondered.

I had my opportunity during my next trip to S. Florida. Leaving behind my house full of shit, I drove my truck to Florida. I pack pretty light because when I go to Florida, I stay at clothing optional resorts and when I do have to wear something, it’s either a very skimpy thong, or shorts and a tank top. So, I was away from most of my material possessions.

Then, some friends who had flown to Florida to join me rented a car, and we decided to drive down to the nude beach. So, I left my truck behind, put on my thong and packed a few things in a plastic bag — my room key, a few dollars cash, and a beach towel, which wasn’t even mine. We drove forty-five minutes to the beach. So, now all I had that belonged to me was a thong, and a few dollars.

It took awhile for my schedule to work out to allow me to attend one. I had asked my friend to give me the rundown on what went on at the parties. He told me that the first part of the party would be everyone sharing their favorite wine with the other guests, and eating some light food. As you read my blog, it will become obvious to you that no subject about male models is too controversial for me to discuss. I also don’t mince words. By that, I mean that I am blunt and don’t mind using slang, even at the expense of having a professional sounding blog entry. I try not to be vulgur, and occasionally I will use biological terminology, but I’m just as likely to say dick or cock instead of penis, for example; or ass instead of posterior. Today’s topic is centered around boners. One of the biggest fears males have about being nude in a non-sexual situation is getting a stiffy at an inappropriate time. As a figure model, this can be a problem. With a lot of the modeling I do, especially for photographers, getting hard is not only not a problem, but sometimes requested.

But generally, when you’re in a classroom setting, it’s not a good thing. Does it happen to guys sometimes? Yes. However, there are ways to avoid it. Now some of you are saying, “WHAT? I can’t get hard unless I try to,” there are others of us, like me, who require no physical stimulation at all to get hard. I remember being bored in seventh grade science class and just getting wood because the wind was blowing outside. So, for those of you who are like me, it can be a problem when you’re in a class. Just the thought of all those clothed people, staring at my naked body, looking at my dick and balls, or my ass, or all of the above, creates a certain excitement that can cause spontaneous arousal. How do you avoid this? I have several strategies that have worked well.

1. Forget that you are naked! I know it sounds ridiculous, but basically, after a few minutes, I forget that I’m naked. It becomes a non-issue.

2. Don’t look at yourself! This helps with making number 1 above work. If you are in a pose that requires you to look at yourself, you will find it more difficult to forget that you are naked.

3. Listen to the instructor during the class. Even though I can’t see what the students are drawing, listening to him/her critique the students’ drawings is interesting and educational.

4. If you feel some stirrings down below, don’t panic! Panic will only make it worse, that is, bigger, faster. Instead, have a distraction. For example, I was doing some modeling one day, and the instructor had put a hand on my hip while explaining something to the students. This reminded me that I was naked because I was touched on a spot that normally wouldn’t be exposed. I felt some stirring, my cock started to grow. However, I was in the middle of doing renovations on my house and there were many tasks I was trying to coordinate. So, to distract myself, I just started going over all the tasks, and figuring out the order I needed to do them in. You can use other distractions such as school work, televisions shows, vacation planning, or figuring out what you’d do if you won a million dollars. While I did get a partial boner, I was able to stop it from going to full mast and then get it to go back down.

Others will say, just cover it up. I think once you’ve established yourself with a particular instructor and built a level of trust and then if you do get a boner, it’s not a big deal. If it happens the first time you model, that might raise an eyebrow.

The other thing to remember about figure modeling is that it’s a lot of hard work. It doesn’t sound like it will be, but just try getting into a pose that you think is comfortable and then stay that way, without moving, for fifteen minutes. Unless you are totally relaxed, you’ll be surprised at how tired some of your muscles get. The most important thing to remember, and the one that will win you the most points with the instructors: Show up and show up on time! If something comes up that prevents you from making it, call! If you are consistently showing up on time, you will get asked back, even if you happen to sport wood once in awhile.

One dilemma a lot of models face is whether to do nudes or not. It’s certainly easier to find a photographer who will do TFP/CD with you if you’re willing to show some skin. On the other side, there are concerns about it hurting careers if there are nudes of you floating around.

In general, these days, while being nude around others is still mostly considered a taboo, the myspace/facebook generation seem to be much more open to sharing nude ‘self pics’. And the Internet in general makes access to nudity just a google image search away. On college campuses, there’s a growing number of ‘naked parties’, where students gather and hang out, either naked or very, very close to it, such as a guy wearing a sock on his cock.

On beaches, you also see a lot of guys showing butt cleavage, letting their board shorts sag way down. So, there seems to be a lot less concern about nudity than there used to be — especially if you’ve got a good body.

But can this affect your career? There are examples of people having the course of their careers changed because of it. Frenchie Davis got booted from American Idol due to topless photos on a porn site. Did that really hurt her career? Well, she’s a success on broadway.

What about models though? In the early 90′s a teenage Simon Rex did solo porn videos. He was a model for Ralph Lauren I believe. Then he became an MTV Veejay (remember when MTV used to play music videos?) He later did some gigs on TV shows. Any lack of career advancement was probably not related to the porn. And that was a worst case. Artistic nudes are not considered to be in the same vein as porn.

On the TV series, Make Me a Super Model, which I’m sure many of you watched, they did nude photo shoots. I’d love to see the results. (If anyone has a link, please put it in a comment or email it me.)

I’m not aware of any examples of people hurting their careers by doing artistic nudes. Not saying it hasn’t happened. I’d like to know about it if anyone reading this is aware of some (so add a comment please.)

For me, the decision to do nudes was not difficult. I’m a nudist anyway. And if people can’t appreciate the human form, then I don’t really care. I’m also aware that I’m well past the age of becoming a supermodel or a celebrity. But for those of you who are younger and still have that hope, I would still consider doing nudes — tasteful, artistic nudes.

Frontal nudes can be another issue to address. I think a lot of guys who don’t want to do them are worried about being small. That’s a legit reason for not doing frontal. There’s also the issue of what your family might think if they find out. Again, if it’s artistic, it’s nowhere near the same issue as it is if it’s just porn.

So, it’s one thing to be willing to do nudes, but there are people like me, who are not just willing, but actually prefer nudes. What motivates us? For me, I like doing things that are edgy, that push the envelope, especially if it flies in the face of the puritanical society we have here in the U.S. There’s a lot of repression in this country and that can lead to bad things.

From an artistic perspective, I think male eroticism is underrepresented in art. So, I’m willing to do my part to rectify that… willing to show my ‘part’ to rectify that.

One of the big concerns a male model has to deal with is the issue of body hair. Today, even non-models are doing a lot more manscaping as they call it — shaving chest hair for a well defined look, trimming pubic hair so their partners don’t get a mouth full of hair while going down on them. And then there’s the ‘optical inch’ — the idea that trimming the pubic hair makes the penis look longer. I’ve never been convinced that actually works.

For models, body hair styling can give us versatility, especially when combined with facial and scalp hair styling. Going for that youthful innocence look? Try a clean-shaven face and body along with a youthful, androgynous hair style. Want that masculine look? Let the facial hair grow out for a day or two, get a buzz cut (think military, but slightly longer maybe).

Here’s a bold ad from a few years ago by the ad agency Tom Ford for a men’s fragrance. The French model is completly natural — no manscaping. Perhaps this was an effort to hide the genitals a little, without actually covering them with fabric.

Sometimes, manscaping is dictated by a particular outfit. If you’re doing underwear modeling, you might need to trim up around the genital area so stray hairs are not sticking out around the pouch. I’ve also had situations where I was a scantily clad cater-waiter at a party, and I was wearing only a bowtie and a little g-string with a tuxedo pouch thing. Obviously you want to shave your ass in this situation, but I also had the situation of the pouch being so small that I had to completely shave all my pubes off because the pouch ran so low in the front that it actually didn’t really completely cover the genitals — there was a quarter inch exposure of my shaft. And when you’re almost naked and serving people food, they don’t want to see body hair.

Facial Hair for a masculine look

When I’m doing nude modeling for a figure drawing class, I try to keep most of my body hair shaved or trimmed very short (I have never liked to shave my legs. It is a real hassle, but I do trim them very, very short when the need arises and if really necessary, I will shave them.) In a drawing class, the students need to see all the muscle definition — that’s why you’re there, and why you’re naked. So, short or shaved body hair is a must.

One of the hassles of body shaving is that of ingrown hairs. A really hairy guy can get a lot of ‘razor bumps’ and ingrown hair. The key to controlling this is the use of lotion. I use a lotion that has oils in it. After I get out of the shower, I put it on all shaved parts. The oil-based lotion stays moist a long time, giving your skin long lasting protection from dryness. Keeping the skin moist makes it easier for those hairs to poke through the skin, rather than growing into it. Besides that, it makes the skin look healthier and is a must if you are tanning.

As a male model, it is important to experiment with different looks of body/facial/scalp hair. Know what it takes to make yourself fit a certain image. Try a style and get a friend to do some snaphots. Get friends to evaluate the pictures and tell you if the attempted look is working or not. Get these versatile looks into your portfolio also. Showing many different looks lets potential employers know that you can fit the bill for whatever they want. And that means more jobs and a more successful career.
